ASLM and FIND Publish Study in PLOS Global Public Health on Developing and Implementing a National Essential Diagnostics List (NEDL). 23/May/2023

ASLM and Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) have conducted a study that has been published in PLOS Global Public Health about the contexts, opportunities and challenges of developing and implementing a National Essential Diagnostics List (NEDL). A NEDL is a critical tool developed by the World Health Organization, with the potential to advance the availability of and access to in vitro diagnostics (IVD) in support of universal health coverage.

Together, ASLM and FIND explored available national policies and guidelines to determine how ministries of health organize the selection and implementation of essential diagnostics in their countries. The work included a mixed-methods analysis exploring the decision-making processes, challenges, and opportunities affecting the availability and accessibility of diagnostics in African countries; 307 documents from 48 African countries were reviewed and 28 in-depth (group) interviews with 43 key-informants in seven countries were conducted between June and July 2022. The study provides a unique set of practical recommendations to the process of development and effective implementation on NEDL in Africa.
